Clinical Evaluation of Glomerular Filtration Rate: Something Old, Something New
This presentation will review clinical evaluation of glomerular filtration, a primary indicator of renal function. First, classic tests of glomerular filtration rate (blood urea nitrogen and serum creatinine concentration) and factors affecting their interpretation will be reviewed. Next, the concept of renal clearance will be explained and endogenous creatinine and iohexol clearances will be discussed. Finally, new tests to evaluate glomerular filtration, cystatin C, and symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA) will be described. The interpretation of SDMA and the added value it brings to assessment of glomerular filtration will be reviewed in detail.
The participant will understand the underlying physiology and interpretation of classical tests of glomerular filtration (BUN, serum creatinine).
The participant will understand the concept of clearance and the use of endogenous creatinine clearance and iohexol clearance in assessment of glomerular filtration.
The participant will understand the advantages and interpretation of SDMA in the assessment of glomerular filtration.
