Achieve Lowest-Dose Radiation: Radiation Safety Is Your Safety
The primary challenge of radiation protection safety programs is to keep the radiation dose at a minimum while obtaining the highest image quality needed for accurate medical diagnosis, that is, to achieve the optimal dose. Optimal dose is best accomplished when a radiation safety culture is fostered. This discussion reviews the use of the ALARA principle (as low as reasonably achievable) as well as optimization of image and dose by applying ALARA. ALARA guidelines on education, equipment selection, and anatomic radiographic techniques selection help reduce veterinary patient dose, which reduces occupational staff and general public exposure as well.
